In typical The Walking Dead fashion, tonight’s Talking Dead revealed very little about what’s coming up on the AMC hit.
Host Chris Hardwick was joined by creator Robert Kirkman and stars Norman Reedus and Austin Nichols to talk about tonight’s midseason finale, in which Nichols’ character Spencer was (not so) sadly disemboweled by everybody’s favorite asshole Negan.
Most of the hour was spent discussing Spencer’s demise (which was a long time coming) and fielding questions from fans about onset pranks and nudity, but Kirkman and Reedus did have a couple opportunities to fill us in on what’s to come, specifically about that mysterious post-credits scene, in which a person in boots spied on Father Gabriel.
“I really wish I could tell you,” Kirkman said when Hardwick asked who the boots belong to. “All I can say is that those boots, you’ll definitely recognize those from earlier—they’re connected to that boat scene—and you know, that’s a big part of what we’re dealing with when we come back next half of the season, so we’ll be revealing that soon. It’s going to be a great half season.”
The best part about the way tonight’s midseason finale ended was that it brought the group back together, under one common goal of taking Negan down. Kirkman says things are really back to normal, in a way.
“Rick Grimes is back to being Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon back to being Daryl Dixon, whole group back together, ready to kick some ass,” he said.
“I think as much as they protest, I think we know these characters at this point,” he said. “When the fight starts, they’re probably going to be right in there.”
Other than those tidbits, much of tonight’s show was oddly light—a tone that was probably set by this joke from Hardwick, which had the entire studio cracking up: “By the way, this show tonight—this is every kind of white guy you can get right here.”
